Top 10 Ways to Recycle Your Old Computer

1. Recycle

Recycling that old computer seems the most logical conclusion, but this process is fraught with complicated issues. How do you protect the material contained on that old hard drive? Where does that computer go once it’s left your hands? Since ID theft and e-waste smuggling operations are rife, your computer may end up in the hands of the wrong person in the wrong country.

You can eliminate the first problem by using a product like Eraser that eliminates all data on your hard drive. Your diligence in this effort will help you rest assured that you haven’t passed on any readable private data. The second solution involves discovering where that recycling center sends your computer and its parts once they take charge. According to Treehugger, developed countries have been exporting tons of electronic waste to China for inexpensive, labor-intensive recycling and disposal for years. This activity was made illegal in 2000, but smuggling, corruption, and “China’s appetite for scrap” opens doors for your old computer to take part in this nefarious cycle.

1. Greasemonkey repository at Google Code:

Started by Mihai Parparita, a Google employee (though unaffiliated with Gmail), this Google Code repository has some of the coolest and most functional Gmail scripts for Greasemonkey, an add-on for Firefox. Scripts for adding colors to labels, saving searches and even integrating Gmail + Google Reader can all be found here.

2. The Macros script:

Found at that Google Code repository, I firmly believe this is *the* essential Gmail trick to end all Gmail tricks. It adds a serious dose of productivity that can make Gmail more functional than any desktop email client on the block. This script has shortcuts for label navigation, simultaneously marking as read + archiving, labeling messages on the fly and much more - all from the keyboard. Once you get this script installed, pressing ‘h’ should display a slick overlay of all available shortcuts.

1. Figure out your starting point.

How much weight do you want to lose? What kind of shape are you in now? What are your eating habits? Once you realize where you are starting from, you will get a better idea of what program will work best for you. If you dont exercise at all, then starting out with a two hour extreme workout, might cause you to give up early when it turns out to be too hard. If you love carbs and eat them three times a day, an Atkins diet might be too frusterating. Pick a plan that makes sence for you.

2. Take baby steps.

Start out by making small changes to your daily life. Taking a walk after dinner, or in the morning. Light streching or yoga. Start replacing “bad” foods with good foods. Try something new. Instead of regular milk, try soy milk, hummus instead of mayo, low carb bread, veggie burgers,a different healther cereal, a new kind of fruit. There are many many food choices out there and you might be surprised at what you end up liking. Try different brands and combinations. When you start eating and treating your body better, you will be more motivated to make other changes.
